| | Background | | Until the late 1990's, Spain had very little to offer the organic wine drinker, apart from the pioneering Albet i Noya estate in Penedes. Then the release of the 1998 vintage brought forth a relative torrent of choices - from Rioja, La Mancha, Valencia, and Murcia in particular. | | ![Background]() |
| | The estate | The first Rioja Vinceremos listed came from Bodegas Bagordi, an estate in the valley of the river Ega, a tributary of the Ebro. The estate extends over approximately 210 acres of which most are fully organic.
The Bagordi estate grows all the varieties of grapes authorised by the DOC authorities and has fast made a name for itself as a consistently high quality producer of benchmark mellow reds.

| | Organic philosophy | Luis Manuel Carcar ('Luisma' to his friends) is a gentle and mild-mannered man who's nonetheless passionately enthusiastic about his wines and the development of the estate. Born in the early 1960's in nearby Andosilla, he's a fourth generation vigneron and now heads up the Bagordi team. He has studied widely: general agriculture and viticulture, business studies and, more recently, organic viticulture.
"In the quality of our wines is where you feel the importance of organic agriculture - in fact I prefer to call it traditional agriculture
like my ancestors did. We really mollycoddle our grapes - that's the way to get the best wines!"
In 2004/2005 the cellars of the Bodega were enlarged. With the extra storage space, Luisma now is able to devote more time to producing aged and vintage wines. Previously, older vintages had to be sold first to make room for the new.
