| | Background | | South Africa's wine industry took a while to emerge from the dark shadow of apartheid and the consumer boycott which accompanied it. At first (with some notable exceptions) the quality was low; innovation, modernisation and vitality were needed to make up lost ground. Thankfully a new wave of vineyard owners and wine-makers has begun to restore South Africa's reputation as a serious player on the world scene - and a handful of these are making organic wines. | | ![Background]() |
| | The estate | The farm is situated in a remote valley in the Breede River Valley (Western Cape). The area is well known for its very low rainfall (only150 mm per annum). The soil is rich in lime, ideal for growing quality vines. Twelve families live on the farm. There's a small school in the valley and the du Preez's are busy upgrading a crèche for the younger children. Their organic farming practices (officially certified since 2000) are fairly labour intensive, both in the preparation of the vineyard and around harvest time.
Organic philosophy The family-run Bon Cap vineyard, now in its seventh generation, has been farming organically for years because they could see the benefit to the land.
Roelf is a winemaker with a passion for farming which he shares with his children and at weekends they and their dogs can usually be found in the vineyards. In 2007 he has appointed a young winemaker, giving him more time to spend on organic farming.
Roelf du Preez's biggest wish is that through his wines the consumers will experience the passion he and his family have for farming.
