 Montirius

Background
The owners of Montirius, Eric and Christine Saurel, first met when they were science students beginning their baccalaureat. Eric's family had been wine producers for 5 generations, so after passing his exams he studied vineyard management and wine-making in Bordeaux while Christine read chemistry and computing.

On the day that Eric travelled to Marseilles to purchase the 8 hectare parcel of land that represented their first addition to the estate, (a wood-fringed 'clos' where they later built the new family home), Christine discovered that she was pregnant with their first child. The new estate name 'Montirius' is derived from the contraction of the names of their three children - Manon, Justine and Marius; and here's the key to their all inclusive and family centred approach.

Our philosophy of life is holistic: the integration of all aspects. We don't keep the children's lives separate, they work with us, they play with us. They come shopping and always read the ingredients to check for GM products. They even help paint the house … if they want to! We want them to learn about all aspects of life. It's the reason we don't send them to a Steiner school. We want them to learn about different things as well, not just our life here. When Manon sees an advert on TV telling her how good Macdonalds food is she knows it's not the whole story.
 Background

The estate
The estate is located in the south of the Rhone region and extends to a total of 143 acres, divided over 6 vineyards.

In 2002 the Saurels had a new winery built on the slopes of the Clos Montirius vineyard. The winery rises over three levels (partly underground) and the dimensions of the ground floor of the winery (height, width and length) were calculated to correspond to the magnetic grid orientation of the site.

Organic philosophy and conversion to biodynamics
The vineyard's conversion to biodynamic methods was gradual. In 1980 Eric's father had abandoned chemical fertilisers, having noted their negative effects on the soil. In 1987, from personal conviction, Eric stopped using herbicides. Two years later, when Justine their oldest daughter had some health problems, the Saurels discovered homeopathy and ditched the antibiotics. The results were impressive, and the consequences far-reaching.

From that moment we discovered a new way of life. We changed our diet, paying more attention to the quality of the food that we were putting on our plates, and rapidly found ourselves applying the same principles in our professional life.

The next step was to end pesticide usage, in 1990. Yet despite all their efforts they had a sense that their vineyard wasn't in perfect health. They had done all they could to adopt organic practices but still they weren't completely satisfied. At a time when they were uncertain where to take things next, a viticulteur friend told them of his experience they heard about biodynamic agriculture from another viticulteur.
