Distillerie du Peyrat
The Distillerie du Peyrat is located in a quaint village of the same name situated on the Via Agrippa which linked Lyon and the Atlantic coast during Roman times. Its cognacs are created by a small river in the gentle Charente countryside, 10 km from the town of Cognac.”Before becoming cognac, our wines are submitted to a trial by fire and copper imposed by the propitious alchemy of the Charente pot still. Distillation is an accomplishment, an essential task confided only to specialists; insofar as the Distillerie du Peyrat is concerned, its secrets have remained closely guarded since 1725 when an ancestor of our family set up shop as a marchand brûleur”.
Made using a double distillation process with direct flaming of the typical cognac pot stills. Small pot stills are used during the second distillation in order to preserve and concentrate the best aromas.
All ageing is in Limousin oak barrels. New barrels contribute colour, wood, tannins and banana aromas whereas old barrels bring fine spice flavours. As the distillery is located beside a small river, the ageing process derives benefit from more humid conditions.
Organic since 1998

Description
Cognac VSOP Rare, Peyrat
Peyrat’s subtle and fruity VSOP is a minimum of 7 years old. On the nose it’s generous with vanilla, plum and apricot aromas, whilst the palate is refined, beautifully round, light and mellow. Being a small concern, the distillery only produces around 160,000 bottles of this particular Cognac per year. Because the vineyards are located in the ‘Fins Bois’ area of production, just a few kilometres away from the delimited Grande Champagne area (also known as the Premier Cru), the VSOP benefits from two terroirs. One produces blends that have strength and fullness; the other lends a more round and supple style, and matures more quickly than than Cognacs from Grande Champagne. You can enjoy this VSOP in a variety of ways: neat, on the rocks, perhaps with a mixer or as a delicious component in a cocktail.
“The fragrance comes rushing out of the glass in succulent waves of ripe grapes, plums and new leather scents. Fruitiness turns into keen spiciness as vibrant complex scents of cinnamon, clove and vanilla bean all hit the right notes… Superb.”
Paul Pacult, The Spirit Journal December 2009
Ditto – Highly Recommended 4 Stars 2017
“This easy-drinking Cognac smells like dessert—think caramel, baked pear and marzipan. Fleeting sweetness on the feather-light palate echoes those aromas as delicious vanilla, almond and creamy flan wind into a zingy citrus finish accented by ginger.”
