Monastrell ‘Mirasoles’, Finca El Olmillo
Monastrell is a small, thick-skinned grape variety (known elsewhere as Mourvèdre and Mataró) widely grown in south-eastern Spain. It’s a tricky grape to grow and wines made purely from it tend to be high in alcohol, as when picked a little less ripe it lacks flavour and colour. To reverse an old saying ’out of the sweetness came forth a lion’. This lion from Finca El Olmillo is quite a simple, honest red, yet with a slightly perfumed style. On the nose and palate it’s rich and velvety with loads of blackcurrant and blackberry fruit and distinct sweetness on the finish.
