La Riojana was established in 1940 in La Rioja province by Italian immigrants. Now it has an annual production of almost 5 million cases (around 10% of which is organic). The main winery and vineyards are in the remote Famatina Valley with high altitude vineyards which enjoy warm days, cool nights and very low rainfall. The 500-strong cooperative was Argentina’s first Fairtrade wine supplier.
