Cantine Volpi
A family enterprise, established in the Piemontese town of Tortona in
1914. In the 1980’s, after years of experience in producing wine with
other people’s grapes, Bruno and Carlo Volpi acquired the best properties
available in the Colli Tortonesi, to guarantee the winery high quality local fruit.
In our case though, he acts as bottler and agent for organic wines sourced
in Veneto, Sicily, Puglia, Marche, Molise and Abruzzo.
Vineyard size 115 hectares (suppliers). Organic since 2000.

Description
Timorasso La Zerba, Cantine Volpi
When Carlo Volpi finally obtained the ‘La Zerba’ vineyards in 2003 he was both realising his father’s dream and taking a first step towards helping to save an endangered indigenous grape variety. The vineyards were abandoned and derelict and Carlo intended to clear them to make a fresh start. However, winemaker Giuliano Noè convinced him to restore it, which he did with outstanding results. La Zerba has 10 hectares of vineyards and fruit trees all certified organic and is one of only twenty estates growing this highly impressive grape as well as its red partner Barbera. This is an exciting and captivating wine. Its fairly intense floral nose introduces delicious ripe fruit flavours: melon, pear, apple and pineapple with a touch of vanilla. There’s good acidity and a herbal edge and traces of the acacia in which its aged. Good with appetizers, light pasta and rice dishes like saffron risotto, and both fresh and saltwater fish.
